Some businesses who have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic can apply for government funding to continue to pay their employees which is known as Furloughing though other companies are unfortunately at risk of putting staff under redundancy.
There may be a multitude of reasons why a business chooses the route of redundancy, but it is best to remember that there is a logical, commercially driven decision behind what is happening – it’s not personal.

Reach out to people
You are most likely to have mixed emotions during this time, so it is important that you reach out to your friends and family to discuss how you are feeling. Talking to somebody you trust, will help with your mental well-being.

Temporary & Contract work
Have you ever considered temping before? What has stopped you?
During challenging economic times there will always be sectors that are booming. There will always be companies that are recruiting. Your new goal is to find out who is busy and expanding and it’s never been easier to find this information via the internet. Your first task is to find roles within your expertise and industry, however if your industry has taken a hit, then consider your transferrable skills – everyone has them! Remember the big picture, remember if you are dealing with customers in any industry these communication and interpersonal skills are transferable. If you are in sales, what is stopping you selling a different product or service? If you have used a particular piece of software, a company is often more interested in that, than the industry you have come from. If you work in accounts and finance these skills are transferable across industries and the various accountancy software platforms are straight forward to learn, and bookkeeping skills are always sought after. Qualifications may not be sector specific, research who else would benefit from your level of qualification.
Everyone has transferable skills and temping or contract work will give you the confidence to display those skills. Once people move into the contract world, they often do not want to return to a permanent role as they share their invaluable expertise with a new company and then enjoy the variety and flexibility that contract work gives you. Alternatively, temping gives you the opportunity to learn about a company, its culture and customer engagement, before you commit to a permanent opportunity – try before you buy!
